Japanese feminist Raicho Hiratsuka chose the name Raicho for herself – no doubt because of its fabulous meaning: “Thunderbird.” She founded Seito (meaning “bluestocking”), which started as a literary magazine, but quickly became the preeminent forum for Japanese feminism.
